Small onion price increased

Price of small or sambar onion price has increased in the market. In Chennai, its sold for Rs 180 per kg. Main cause is due to the low yield. Small onions are grown in Tamil Nadu in areas such as Udumalaipettai, Kangyam, Dharapuram, Mecheri, Thalaivasal, Aathur, Omalur, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Namakkal and harvested.

Due to the recent rains in Tamil Nadu, yield are been severely affected. Thus, onion plants had got rotten. Quantity of small onions sent to market is reduced. Another point of note is only about 20% of the yield is sent to the vegetable market for sales. Due to all these factors had let to high price rise of small onions. Demand of small onions have increased high. On normal days, few months ago, small onions were sold at Rs 30/40/50 per kg. Due recent scarcity, it was sold at Rs. 100 per kg.

Now it has shot up again and small onion is sold at Rs 130 per kg. That too, this price is for the wholesale market. Retail price is said to be even more higher. As per information, retail small onion price is around Rs. 180 per kg.
