Vegetable prices down in Chennai Koyambedu

As the quantity of vegetables arriving from the states of Andhra and Karnataka has increased, the prices of vegetables have been coming down since the last week.

Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market received vegetables from the states of Andhra and Karnataka as well as from other districts of Tamil Nadu like Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Hosur, Ottanchathiram, and Theni. The prices of the vegetables are based on the quantity of arriving from these places.

It must be noted that the prices of the vegetables were rather high from the month of May. However, the prices have come down presently. As compared to the last week’s prices in Koyambedu, the prices of many vegetables have come down.

The price of tomato has come down by Rs. 5/- per kg and is sold at Rs. 15/- per kg. The price of brinjal is down by Rs. 4/- per kg and is sold at Rs. 8/- per kg. The price of lady’s finger okra (vendaikkai) has come down by Rs. 5/- per kg and is sold at Rs. 10/- per kg. The price of cabbage has come down by Rs. 2/- per kg and is sold at Rs. 6/- per kg. The price of drumstick has come down by Rs. 5/- per kg and is sold at Rs. 23/- per kg. The price of beans has come down by Rs. 10/- per kg and is sold at Rs. 40/- per kg. The prices of vegetables have come down even in organic green farm shops and retail vegetable shops.

When enquired about this trend, the secretary of the Koyambedu Market Traders Welfare Association, Mr. S. S. Muthukumar told that the vegetable season has commenced in the states of Andhra and Karnataka. So, the produce of vegetables have increased leading to a reduction in prices. The prices of the vegetables will be down for the next few months.
