How to prepare Fish Biryani

Cooking Time: 1 hour

Serves – 3 to 4

Ingredients for Cooking Rice:

2 cups Basmati Rice

Lots of Water

4  Cardamom( Yelakai )

4 Cloves / Krambu

1 small stick Cinnamon / Pattai

1 tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeera

2 Bay Leaf

3 tsp Salt

For Fried Fish:

  • 1/2 kg Fish Pieces
  • Salt to taste
  • 1tsp Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder (Malli podi )
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder ( Manjal podi )
  • 1 tsp Cumin powder (Jeera podi )
  • Lemon Juice – to taste
  • Oil – 1/4 cup

For Briyani:

  • Bay Leaves / Briyani leaf – 1
  • 2 large thin sliced Onion
  • 3 Green Chilli
  • 2tbspn Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1tsp Chilli powder
  • 1tsp Coriander powder (Malli podi )
  • 1tsp Turmeric powder (Manjal podi )
  • 1tsp Cumin powder / Jeera podi
  • 2tbsp Garam Masala Powder
  • One large chopped Tomato – 1 large chopped
  • One cup Curd
  • 1/2 finely chopped Mint Leaves
  • 1/2 finely chopped Coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

For Saffron Milk:

  • Saffron – a pinch
  • Warm Milk – 1/4 cup


  • Wash and soak rice for 30 mins. Boil lots of water into which ingredients given for cooking rice are to be added. Add the soaked rice into the water and cook it for 8 to 10mins until its grains are 90 percentage cooked. Drain and keep it aside.
  • Mix saffron with warm milk and keep it aside
  • Mix up the fish with lots of ingredients for fried fish for about 30 mins. Heat oil into a heavy bottom pan. Add the fish pieces into the oil and fry it well for 5 mins on both side. Place them in a plate from the pan. 
  • In the remaining oil, add in bay leaves and fry them well for few mins. Add in sliced onions, green chilli and saute for about 5 mins.
  • After the onion is cooked, add ginger garlic paste and saute up for a min.
  • Now add up spice powders and mix it well for 30 sec.
  • Add in tomatoes and a little water. Cook this for 5 mins until the tomatoes are completely mashed up.
  • Add salt, coriander leaves, mint leaves and curd into it. Mix it up well. Cook it for 5 mins until the masala is cooked well.
  • Now put the cooked rice on the top and a little more coriander and mint leaves. Pour some saffron milk little and place up the fish pieces onto the top of the rice.
  • Cover up the whole thing and place it over to a heavy bottom tawa and put the tawa on low heat. Let the whole thing to be on dum for about 15 to 20 mins. Open the lid and mix very well.
  • Serve this Briyani with raita.
