Coconut and Copra fetch high price until March
Coconut and copra would fetch a better price for farmers until March, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). As per the price analysis done by it, farmers could expect good quality coconuts to fetch farm gate price of Rs 15 to Rs 17 per piece, while good copra is said to fetch them Rs 105 per kg. Higher prices is said to expect to prevail until March end because of the festive season across the state. Study found that damage caused to coconut plantations due to cyclone Gaja and upcoming festive season spur up the demand for coconuts. It’s said that due to short supply coconuts brought from Karnataka to meet up the demand. Copra is brought from Udumalpet, Palladam, Dharapuram, Gobichettipalayam and Pattukottai.
TNAU forecast is based on copra and coconut prices prevailed at the Avalpoonthurai regulated market in Erode for past 18 years at Perundurai Agricultural Produces Cooperative Marketing Society in that district.
While coconut is right now cultivated on 20.79 lakh hectares land across the country, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are the main producers. Southern states together account for about 81% of total coconut production at the country.
